No, I don’t.

I was given a book when I was younger, by Dr. Chandra Suresh, about people with abilities. Its fascinating…it drew me right in. I just want to see everyone, humans and posthumans, living peacefully side by side in our world.

I work through NYU, technically, but I’m doing my research on my own.

Evelyn & Päivi

Päivi could not believe her eyes when Eve got out her own copy of Activating Evolution and handed it to her. She slowly took the book from Eve and slid her fingers across the cover. Between the covers was a whole new world, and to get an impression of the style of writing, Päivi opened the book. She immediately spotted the note Eve’s fathers had written to their daughter, and could not help skimming over it. They wrote that they were proud of her, and apparently had high hopes for Eve’s future. Päivi had gotten plenty of Christmas cards from her parents, but under the current circumstances, they no longer seemed to mean anything to her. THIS was honest, truthful and touching. Päivi fought hard to suppress the tears welling up, and turned around to wipe her eyes dry. „Are you sure that I can borrow this? It must mean so much to you. I promise that I will take good care of it.“

But just as Päivi felt one door closing behind her, she could also see another one opening up right in front of her. She put the book and the slip of paper into her handbag, then tore a page from her memo book to write out her own phone number and address. Smiling, she handed it to Evelyn and said:

„That’s exactly how I see it as well. There’s so much…potential in these abilities, and yet post-humans are denied their abilities. I’m glad to have met someone who sees things like this, it gives me so much hope, really.“

She took a deep breath, already preparing herself mentally for what was yet to come. „I think I have to leave now, can’t wait to get started on this! But I’ll be sure to call you. Maybe I can treat you to some coffee and cake then? I think we all have to take a break from time to time!“

Evelyn watched the woman turn around, her eyes a bit wide in surprise as Paivi seemed..to be drying her eyes? Had she done anything wrong? She quickly thought over everything that had happened, and nothing stood out to her. The…the note? Her eyes flicked quickly to look upon the book. Yes, it was open to the front cover. A strange mix of embarrassment and sorrow welled up inside her as she watched the woman.

“Of course you can borrow it, I have no problem with that. Besides, I have your number and address. If necessary, I could come track it down myself.” She spoke with a light tone and a smile, hoping to brighten the mood a bit. ”But I’m not worried. You seem genuine, and trustworthy. I’m just glad to help.”

It gives me so much hope, really. That simple statement brought a bright smile to Eve’s face. Now that was why she had stuck with this work for so long. She wasn’t in the for the money, for the fame, for anything of prestige and glory. She simply wanted to be able to help those who needed it, in her own way.

“Abilities truly are amazing. I’m always in awe when I witness them.” The offer for coffee and cake was a pleasant surprise, and Eve’s smile conveyed that. ”I’d love to, actually. I haven’t seen the light of day in a while. Where to?”

They would be her hair, her eyes, and her smile. Her hair is long and a golden blonde, which compliments her skin tone. She has big hazel eyes, filled with curiosity and wonder. And her smile is bright, full, and genuine.

Evelyn & Päivi

That was exactly what Päivi hadn’t wanted to hear. She had tricked herself into believing that she was a freak, a genetic anomaly, but now it seemed like she had to face an ugly truth: It was highly probable that at least one of her parents had hidden a big part of themselves from her - for 27 years. The young woman seemed credible, an expert on the topic, and Päivi immediately believed her - even if it would have been easier not to.

Then she started wondering whether the woman hadn’t made the same experience herself. Maybe that was what fueled her interest in the topic? Personal involvement just seemed the most likely explanation. That was nothing she could ask though, but in case Päivi was about to discover that her entire childhood was based on a lie, the woman could be a potential ally. Someone to help her cope with the crumbling construct that could be her life.

“Thank you for your help. You seem very knowledgeable about all this. Why did you start researching about post-humans? It’s not the most…likely research subject, so to speak, is it? Oh, and before I forget: Since I’m planning to try and learn a bit more about all this, could we exchange number or e-mail adresses? I promise I won’t bother you, just in case I don’t understand a thing or get totall stuck.”

She then held out her hand: “I’m Päivi, by the way.”

Evelyn watched the stranger quietly, patiently. She could see the gears grinding internally as she processed the information. What was simple knowledge to Evelyn was unknown to many-something she often forgot. Eve got so lost in her own work, she forgot how many different perspectives there were, and just how little was known to mainstream society. It was the blindness that came with her research. This conversation was making her realize that she needed to end the separation between scientific research and society. Dr. Suresh was giving lectures about his work and his own ability. Eve, as terrified as she was to try and join the stage with so prestigious a scientist, knew now that she needed to do something.

“I was given the book that you’re looking for, Activating Evolution, by my parents when I was younger. I read it so many times.” She laughed a bit at herself. ”Its a fascinating read, and I felt drawn to the subject. I admire the work of both Drs Suresh, and I have always been good with science, biology specifically. So, it seemed to be the logical choice.” She offered a smile to the woman. ”I’m not someone with abilities, though. I’m just…I just want to see equality for everyone. Posthumans and humans should be able to live peacefully, side by side, sharing the world.”

“Its a pleasure to meet you, Päivi.” She gave a bright smile as she shook the woman’s hand. ”I’m Eve. And certainly. You can have both. I just have a cell phone, but you can text or call me whenever. Or you can come by here. I’m always here in the library or in one of the labs, doing work.” Quickly, she tore a small piece of paper out of her notebook and scribbled her number and email address on it.

“Oh, one more thing…” She hesitated before reaching into her bag, and pulling out her person copy of Activating Evolution. A smile came to her face as she looked fondly at the book’s cover. On the inside cover was what her fathers wrote to her when the book was given to her for Christmas-how proud they were of her, how inspired they were by her hard work, and how they hoped she’d continue her research and help the world. Most people would have been embarrassed to have something so personal offered to a stranger, but with Eve, it was part of the package. ”You can borrow this. You don’t have to worry about late charges when borrowing someone else’s book.” Eve slipped the paper with her number and email right in the book, and handed it to Päivi. “Don’t mind the notes I’ve taken in the margins. Maybe they can even help you clarify some things. The book is heavy in scientific terms. Don’t hesitate to ask questions about it.”
